Friday kicks off Pride Weekend in Cincinnati, and for the first time, the city of Cincinnati and Hamilton County are displaying rainbow flags in support of LGBTQ equality.

City Councilman Chris Seelbach, council’s first openly gay council member, announced the news on Twitter on Sunday.

“For the first time in the history of the City of Cincinnati, we will raise the rainbow pride flag in front of Cincinnati City Hall this Friday at 11am. Please join us.”

On Friday, Hamilton County Commissioner Denise Driehaus issued this statement:

“Flying the rainbow flag on county flag poles sends the strong message that Hamilton County welcomes and supports our LGBTQ neighbors, family members, and employees. Leading into the Cincinnati Pride Parade and Festival weekend, we hope visitors and residents will look up and know that they are in a community that celebrates inclusiveness and diversity. We thank the City of Cincinnati for taking the first step and we are proud to join them.”

The flags were donated by county employees and they will be flown through June.
